• Betty & Veronica: Vixens #1

Written by Jamie Lee Rotante / Drawn by Eva Cabrera

It seems as though Archie’s Betty and Veronica have been given the rockabilly makeover, placing them at the head of a motorcycle gang out to tear up Riverdale’s asphalt. That may sound promising, especially if you dig on DC’s Bombshells and Gotham City Garage, but unfortunately the product fails to deliver.

Archie and Reggie have been moonlighting as bikers, until a misadventure on the open road draws the ire of some mean hombres called the South Side Serpents. When the Serpents roll into Riverdale and trash the joint, Betty and Veronica decide to start their own motorcycle gang to protect their beloved hometown, and send the message that if you eff with Riverdale you get tread marks around your eye.

The best thing about this comic is Fiona Staples drawing one of the variant covers. The writing is corny in an Archie kind of way, but given the rebellious attitude this book is going for, it just doesn’t jive. Worse yet, there is a concerted effort to portray a message of female empowerment that falls flat on its face after awkwardly tripping over its own laces. The results ain’t pretty! The nicest thing I can muster to say about the art is that it’s serviceable. Check the preview page to make your own judgement.

Even if I wasn’t long over the constant re-skinning of the Archie universe, this comic does not have the style or finesse to pull off what it’s going for here. Bombshells and Gotham City Garage are leagues ahead, so pick them up if rockabilly girls are your thing. They’re very much mine, so I know it when I see it. You dig daddy-o? -Keli
