Frank Castle has an unstoppable will — a powerful drive to punish those who do wrong, rooted in the tragic killing of his family. Wade Wilson has an unstoppable mouth — an unthinking knack for annoying everyone around him, rooted in thinking he’s funny. Both men, however, are among the deadliest on the planet.
Marvel is once again digging into the well that is “Deadpool with other major Marvel character”. Can’t really blame them – there appears to be a deep pool (see what I did there?) of fans that want to pay for anything that Mr. D. Pool appears in.
Written by Fred Van Lente who is known for Incredible Hercules and three entries in the Marvel Zombies series, as well his original graphic novel Cowboys & Aliens which was adapted into the movie starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Artist Pere Perez appears to be a DC regular with his artwork although there’s not a lot about him on the ‘net (as a side note: I’d imagine that he’s not too happy with some major comic sites calling him Pepe.)
Let’s get this out of the way: the Deadpool books recently have not lived up to the bar that was raised WAY up by the movie. But this story is one of the first where I could actually see the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool playing the role. Finally!
And The Punisher is as expected: cold, calculating and indifferent to Wade’s stupidity. As a pairing, this works pretty well and its one of the first books where the “versus” concept works well. A lot better than some of the previous Deadpool versus books anyways (*cough* Thanos *cough*).
As far as art and the style of this book – if you are a fan of newer Amazing Spider-man or the like – this is the book for you. Its very clean and concise ink gets the concept across without much guesswork.
If you like either of these characters, this five book series might be a good jumping in point without worrying that you need to be in it for the long haul. Definitely good for a taste.
