MARS. The near future-ish. A bomb takes out a city block on Harrison Station. The media rush to blame the local terrestrials (re: aliens), however Superintendent Denton Coyle has a feeling that it may not be so simple… or maybe that feeling is Coyle’s hangover gut bomb. It’s unclear… like a 50/50 shot, it’s a mistake or explosive diarrhea. Maybe it’s both? In other words, it’s yet another Tuesday on Mars.
I’ve got to fess up here: Redline was not even remotely on my radar. I had heard nothing about it before it was offered up to be reviewed. And then I was doing my research on the creators of this book and BOOM! Neil. Friggin. Holman. The producer and art director of Archer – one of the funniest cartoons of all time – is the writer! This book just got a whole lot more interesting…
Redline is for adults. Period. It’ll appeal to the Sex Criminals/Archer crowd. The story is a bit like the aforementioned properties with some Starship Troopers mixed in for atmosphere. And its super sarcastic – a great example of this is about midway through the book when almost an entire page is dedicated to the team trying to figure out how to screw over one of their own who accidentally got his arm caught in a rock.
This is funny stuff and I’m quite surprised its flown under the radar. McCormack does a great job of portraying a gritty Mars environment in his art style. The colouring does the futuristic western proud (the colourist is Kelly Fitzpatrick – known for Bitch Planet).
It’s not a book for everyone. People that have issues with strong language need not apply. Everyone else – come on in*! Its available tomorrow – get it while its hot… I have a feeling this book will be popular when word gets out.
*Phrasing! (Archer fans get it)
